Sharpsburg, Maryland--Canoeist pass Burnside's Bridge while paddling the Antietam Creek. The bridge is the site were 400 Georgian confederate troops held Maj. Gen. Ambrose Burnside's 12,500 troops at bay for hours during the Battle of Antietam, September 17, 1862. The Battle of Antietam was the bloodiest day in U.S. Military history with 22,717 casualties, including the 3,654 soldiers killed.
